Contract Packaging and Kitting Community
In this case study a Contract Packager was asked by his customer to engage in the repackaging for a major food possessor.
Mini Case Study
Situation
A major Contract Packager, with 16 locations, was asked by one of its biggest customers to bid on the updating of an OEM food product line. There would be approximately 15-20 items which would require local packing in 7 different cities. Packaging consistency was the primary concern because the products were being sent to one of the nations largest grocery chains.
Solution
Shorr sales and technical personnel, along with the Contract Packager interviewed the food processor. Critical information was gathered relative to packaging volumes, work flow, and service level expectations. The Shorr Team created specifications for facility work flow/material handling, packing stations, and equipment. A pilot program was created to prove out proof-of-concept.
Results
Within 3 weeks the project was specified; blueprints were created for racking, workstations, and packing lines. The equipment was agreed upon and packaging materials were ordered. The pilot project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. Warehouse design, material handling and packaging automation came in under the budgeted manpower considerations. The food processor was delighted with the results and expanded the project to include 6 additional sites. Within 2 months all facilities were operational.
