A large national 3PL specializing in internet fulfillment was looking into ways to reduce shipping expenses. Warehouse personnel were cutting down boxes in an effort to avoid DIM weight dimensional charges. The boxes were inconsistently sealed and varied in appearance. The 3PL's customer was dissatisfied with how it's products were being presented to the ultimate consumers.

Solution

They proposed new corrugated box configurations that were not subject to DIM weight charge guidelines. The new box configurations met 85% of the customers requirements.

The new packaging configurations allowed for a reallocation of 3 workers, (those cutting down boxes), freed up warehouse floor space, improved the packaging appearance, improved carton closure integrity, and dramatically reduced shipping expense.
