Redesign Corrugated Boxes to Reduce Quality Rejects

Mon September 20, 2010

The Regular Slotted Container (RSC) is the most common style of corrugated boxes, and for good reason. RSC boxes, characterized by outer flaps that meet in the center along the length dimension, are easy to set up, easy to seal, and require less corrugated linerboard to manufacture than most other box styles of the same inner dimensions.

For most applications, RSCs are hard to beat, which is why our corrugated stock boxes have been immensely popular for decades. But sometimes, an RSC is not enough to protect products. Shippers sometimes expend an enormous amount of effort testing various protective packaging products, when a simple change in box style will effectively reduce quality rejects for internal shipments and eliminate damage to customer shipments. Here are two examples.

A Full Overlap Slotted Container (FOL) features outer flaps that overlap, allowing the corrugated box to be sealed at one top and bottom edge with an L-clip. The additional board at the top and bottom enhance the box's cushioning performance.

A Full Telescope Design Style Container (FTD) is a two-piece corrugated box, where the top is fitted tightly and completely over the bottom. The additional board provides superior cushioning, stacking strength, and moisture resistence.

Our Package Design Department can help you design a box that meets your functional and budgetary needs, as well as provide prototypes for testing.

For a higher altitude needs assessment, our STAMP packaging management audit may also be an excellent place to start.
