The Top Sustainable Company in Each State

It should come as no surprise that reducing environmental footprints has become a large topic of focus for both B2B and B2C brands (and the customers/consumers who support those brands). One key issue, relative to corporate sustainability, is packaging. With potential areas of focus spanning the entire supply chain – designing for recovery, bioplastics, compostable packaging, material health, etc. – there is no shortage of ways that organizations can take both immediate and long-term steps toward utilizing sustainable packaging.

For example, Aldi, Samsung and Nestlé are just a few of the corporations that have set aggressive packaging sustainability goals – with all three brands declaring total packaging sustainability by 2025.

At Shorr Packaging, we are committed to delivering solutions to our customers that help them achieve all of their packaging initiatives and to assist in reducing environmental impact wherever possible. As a result, we set out to explore which companies across the United States are leading the pack relative to best in class, sustainable supply chains.

The infographic below highlights the “top sustainable company” in every state across the U.S.

Infographic Methodology

To develop this infographic, Shorr Packaging sourced data from the most recent global and domestic rankings, available lists and mentions related to sustainable and green companies. The final list was compiled using Newsweek’s Top 500 Global Companies rankings, Barrons’ “100 Most Sustainable U.S. Companies” list, Corporate Knights’ “2019 Global 100” ranking, and Rubicon’s “Top Sustainable Small Businesses in Each State” list. Companies in each state were determined by their ranking in each list and/or their combined rankings if the state was featured in multiple lists.

The Case for Sustainable Packaging

The sustainable packaging industry is expected to reach $400 million by 2024. That growth is due in large part to consumers’ concern about the environment. According to a 2018 Neilson report, products (chocolate, coffee and bath products were used as examples in the report) with sustainability claims and/or attributes outperformed the growth rate of total products in their categories.

With containers and packaging amounting to 77.9 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) on an annual basis (nearly 30 percent of the total waste generated) products with sustainable packaging could not only help the environment, but significantly help your bottom line.
